Ethereum Foundation pivots away from Poseidon in post-quantum plan

The Ethereum Foundation is stepping back from the Poseidon hash function as it charts a course toward a quantum-resistant future, with researcher Justin Drake pointing to fresh breakthroughs in proving technology that have neutralized the algorithm's former edge.

Why Poseidon Is Being Reconsidered

Poseidon was long viewed as a strong candidate for Ethereum's cryptographic roadmap thanks to its efficiency inside zero-knowledge proof systems. Its design made it especially attractive for applications that needed to generate proofs quickly and cheaply, giving it a clear performance advantage over more traditional hash functions.

According to Drake, that advantage has largely evaporated. Recent progress in producing compact proofs has closed the gap, meaning the practical benefits that once justified prioritizing Poseidon no longer carry the same weight in the Foundation's planning.

The performance lead that made Poseidon compelling has effectively disappeared, reshaping Ethereum's cryptographic priorities.

The Post-Quantum Motivation
