El Salvador’s post-review Bitcoin accumulation used no public funds: IMF

By Diego Whitfield · · 2 min read

El Salvador's continued Bitcoin purchases following its agreement with the International Monetary Fund did not involve any taxpayer money, according to the IMF, which credited the accumulation to private donations rather than government spending.

IMF Clarifies Source of Recent Bitcoin

The IMF addressed lingering questions about El Salvador's cryptocurrency holdings after the Central American nation reported adding roughly $100 million worth of Bitcoin to its reserves. The financial body indicated that any Bitcoin acquired since June 2025 came from private contributions rather than the public purse.

The clarification comes as part of the ongoing relationship between El Salvador and the IMF, which had previously expressed reservations about the country's aggressive embrace of Bitcoin as legal tender. Under the terms of their arrangement, El Salvador agreed to scale back certain public-sector Bitcoin activities.

No public funds were spent — the new Bitcoin came entirely from private donations, the IMF says.

Balancing Bitcoin Ambitions With IMF Commitments

President Nayib Bukele's administration has remained a vocal advocate for Bitcoin, even as it works to satisfy the conditions attached to its IMF financing. The distinction between publicly funded purchases and privately donated coins has become a key point in demonstrating compliance with the agreement.

By attributing the post-review accumulation to donations, the IMF appears to be signaling that El Salvador has stayed within the boundaries set out in their deal. This framing allows the country to continue growing its Bitcoin position without breaching commitments tied to fiscal transparency and reduced government exposure to the volatile asset.

Key takeaways from the situation include:

  • Bitcoin added after June 2025 is attributed to private donations
  • El Salvador reported acquiring around $100 million in Bitcoin
  • No taxpayer funds were used for the recent accumulation, per the IMF

The developments underscore the delicate balance El Salvador is striking between maintaining its identity as a pioneer in national Bitcoin adoption and meeting the expectations of international lenders that remain cautious about cryptocurrency's role in sovereign finance.
