DOJ says Hamas crypto seizures reached $560,000 as FBI took over fundraising sites

By Priya Chen · · 2 min read

The U.S. Department of Justice has announced the seizure of roughly $560,000 in cryptocurrency tied to Hamas fundraising operations, after the FBI took control of domains and servers used to solicit donations for the militant group's armed wing.

Inside the Operation

According to the DOJ, FBI agents assumed control over web infrastructure connected to Hamas fundraising efforts, including the domain Alqassam.ps. By taking over these sites and their underlying servers, investigators were able to intercept incoming donations and cut off a channel that had been directing funds to the Al-Qassam Brigades, the military faction of Hamas.

The move reflects a growing willingness among U.S. authorities to disrupt terror financing at its digital source, rather than simply tracing transactions after the fact. Controlling the fundraising portals allowed law enforcement to prevent additional contributions from reaching their intended recipients.

Seizing the servers let the FBI stop the money before it ever reached Hamas's armed wing.

Crypto and Terror Financing

The $560,000 figure underscores how digital assets continue to feature in the financing strategies of sanctioned and designated groups. Cryptocurrency's borderless nature has made it an appealing option for organizations seeking to move money outside traditional banking systems, but the transparency of blockchain ledgers has also given investigators powerful tools to follow the trail.

U.S. officials have repeatedly emphasized that crypto is not the anonymous haven some assume it to be. The Al-Qassam Brigades have solicited donations in digital currencies for years, and repeated enforcement actions have chipped away at those campaigns.

Key elements of the DOJ action include:

  • Seizure of approximately $560,000 in cryptocurrency
  • FBI control of domains and servers, including Alqassam.ps
  • Interception of donations intended for the Al-Qassam Brigades
  • Disruption of ongoing fundraising infrastructure

The case adds to a broader pattern of coordinated efforts by the DOJ and FBI to identify, freeze, and confiscate digital assets linked to terrorism, sending a signal that crypto-based fundraising remains squarely within the reach of federal enforcement.
