‘DeFi doesn’t exist anymore,’ just onchain finance: Andre Cronje

By Diego Whitfield · · 2 min read

Andre Cronje, the founder of Flying Tulip and a pioneering figure in decentralized finance, argues that the era of DeFi as originally conceived has come to an end, giving way to what he now calls "onchain finance."

The Death of DeFi as We Knew It

According to Cronje, the protocols that once defined decentralized finance have transformed into something fundamentally different. While these systems still operate on blockchains, they have drifted away from the core principles that originally made DeFi revolutionary — namely immutability and true decentralization.

Cronje suggests that many projects billed as decentralized have compromised on those foundational tenets in pursuit of practicality, growth, or regulatory accommodation. The result is a landscape that resembles traditional finance more than the trustless, permissionless vision that early adopters embraced.

"DeFi doesn't exist anymore — what we have now is onchain finance."

A New Financial Paradigm

The distinction Cronje draws is not merely semantic. Onchain finance, in his view, represents an evolution rather than a betrayal of the original ideals, but it comes with tradeoffs that users should understand clearly.

Where early DeFi protocols prided themselves on being unstoppable and beyond the control of any single entity, many modern platforms incorporate elements of centralized oversight, upgradeability, and administrative control. These features can improve safety and user experience but erode the guarantees that made DeFi distinct.

Key shifts Cronje points to include:

  • A move away from truly immutable smart contracts toward upgradeable systems
  • Reduced decentralization in governance and control
  • Greater alignment with conventional financial structures

Implications for the Industry

Cronje's comments reflect a broader conversation within the crypto community about whether the sector has stayed true to its founding vision or matured into a more pragmatic, hybrid model. As one of DeFi's most influential builders, his perspective carries weight among developers and investors alike.

For participants, the takeaway is a call for clarity: understanding that many platforms labeled as decentralized may not offer the ironclad guarantees the term once implied. Whether this evolution represents progress or a dilution of principles remains a point of ongoing debate across the industry.
