Dartmouth endowment’s crypto exposure drops by $2M amid falling prices

By Diego Whitfield · · 1 min read

Dartmouth College's endowment has seen the value of its cryptocurrency-linked investments fall by roughly $2 million, as declining digital asset prices weighed on holdings that now total about $12 million across three exchange-traded funds.

A Shrinking Crypto Position

The Ivy League institution's endowment holds positions in several prominent crypto ETFs, including the Bitwise Solana staking fund, the Grayscale Ethereum staking product and BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin ETF. Together, those investments have slipped in value as the broader market retreated from recent highs.

The decline underscores how even conservative institutional investors remain exposed to the volatility that defines digital assets. While the drop represents a meaningful dollar figure, it constitutes a modest slice of Dartmouth's overall endowment.

Even the most cautious institutional money can't escape crypto's swings.

Institutions Embrace Regulated Products

Dartmouth's approach reflects a growing trend among universities and other large investors who prefer gaining crypto exposure through regulated, exchange-traded vehicles rather than holding coins directly. ETFs offer familiar structures, custody solutions and reporting standards that appeal to endowment managers.

The choice of staking-focused ETFs for Solana and Ethereum also signals interest in generating yield from proof-of-stake networks, allowing the endowment to potentially earn rewards beyond simple price appreciation.

Key holdings tied to the recent decline include:

  • Bitwise's Solana staking ETF
  • Grayscale's Ethereum staking ETF
  • BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin ETF

The paper losses are tied to market movements rather than any decision to sell, meaning the position could recover if prices rebound. For now, the episode illustrates the double-edged nature of crypto investing, even when accessed through the polished wrappers of Wall Street's largest asset managers.
