Crypto Long & Short: What will the AI agents run on?

By Priya Chen · · 2 min read

As artificial intelligence agents move from novelty to necessity, a pressing question is emerging across both the tech and crypto industries: what financial rails will these autonomous programs use to transact? The answer, increasingly, points toward blockchain-based systems built for machines rather than humans.

The Rise of Autonomous Agents

AI agents are software programs capable of making decisions and executing tasks with minimal human oversight. As these systems grow more sophisticated, they are beginning to perform actions that require economic activity — purchasing data, paying for computing resources, or transacting with other agents on behalf of their users.

The problem is that traditional financial infrastructure was designed with people in mind. Bank accounts, credit cards, and payment processors assume a human user who can verify identity, click through approvals, and respond to fraud alerts. Machines operating at scale and speed need something fundamentally different.

When software starts spending money on its own, the payment system has to think like a machine, not a person.

This is where cryptocurrency enters the conversation. Digital assets and blockchain networks offer programmable, permissionless money that can be moved instantly and without the friction of legacy banking hours or intermediaries. For autonomous agents that might execute thousands of microtransactions, these qualities are not just convenient — they may be essential.

Why Blockchain Fits the Machine Economy

Blockchains provide several features that align neatly with the needs of AI agents. Transactions can be automated through smart contracts, settlement happens without a trusted middleman, and value can be transferred in tiny increments that traditional card networks would find uneconomical to process.

Stablecoins, in particular, have emerged as a natural candidate for agent-to-agent payments. Pegged to fiat currencies, they combine the price stability agents need for predictable accounting with the speed and programmability of crypto rails.

  • Instant, around-the-clock settlement without banking delays
  • Support for micropayments too small for card networks
  • Programmable logic that lets agents transact automatically
  • No requirement for human identity verification at each step

What Comes Next

The convergence of AI and crypto raises fresh questions about oversight, security, and control. If agents can move money independently, safeguards will be needed to prevent runaway spending, fraud, or exploitation. Identity and authorization frameworks purpose-built for machines are likely to become a major area of development.

Still, the momentum appears to be building. As the agent economy takes shape,
