Crypto card spending tops $1 billion as stablecoins move into everyday purchases

By Diego Whitfield · · 1 min read

Crypto-linked card spending has surpassed $1 billion in tracked volume, with stablecoins emerging as the dominant funding source as consumers turn to digital assets for routine, everyday purchases.

Stablecoins Fuel Spending Surge

Tracked card volume has more than tripled over the past year, marking a significant shift in how people use digital currencies. Rather than treating crypto solely as an investment or speculative asset, growing numbers of users are now tapping their holdings to cover daily expenses.

Stablecoins are leading the charge. USDC and USDT together funded more than 70% of the spending recorded, underscoring the appeal of dollar-pegged tokens for transactions where price stability matters. Because these assets are designed to hold their value against the U.S. dollar, they sidestep the volatility that has historically made cryptocurrencies impractical for point-of-sale payments.

Stablecoins are no longer just a trading tool — they're increasingly becoming a wallet for daily life.

Everyday Purchases Take Center Stage

The data points to a maturing use case, with card holders increasingly reaching for crypto to pay for common necessities and services. The spending categories reflect ordinary consumer behavior rather than niche crypto activity.

Common purchases funded through the cards included:

  • Groceries and household essentials
  • Ride-hailing and transportation
  • Subscription services

The rapid tripling of volume suggests that crypto cards are steadily bridging the gap between digital assets and traditional commerce. As more merchants and consumers grow comfortable with the technology, stablecoin-backed spending could continue to gain traction as a mainstream payment method.

The trend also highlights the broader role stablecoins are carving out within the financial ecosystem, moving beyond exchanges and trading desks into the hands of everyday shoppers making practical, real-world transactions.
