Elon Musk's social media platform X is moving deeper into financial services through a partnership with Cross River Bank, which will provide the infrastructure behind X Money's peer-to-peer payments, insured accounts and debit cards.
A Banking Backbone for X Money
Cross River, a banking-as-a-service provider, will serve as the technical and regulatory foundation for X Money as the platform builds out its payments ecosystem. Under the arrangement, Cross River will enable person-to-person transfers, allowing users to send and receive funds directly within the app.
The collaboration also brings FDIC-insured accounts to the platform, meaning customer deposits would carry federal insurance protection up to standard limits. In addition, X Money users are set to gain access to Visa debit cards, giving them a way to spend their balances in the wider economy rather than keeping funds locked inside the app.
The move signals X's ambition to transform from a social network into a full-fledged financial hub.
The "Everything App" Vision
The rollout aligns with Musk's long-stated goal of turning X into an "everything app" that combines communication, content and money movement in a single interface. Embedded finance partnerships like this one let platforms offer banking-style features without directly holding a bank charter.
For X, leaning on an established, regulated partner helps address the compliance and trust hurdles that come with handling consumer money. Cross River has built its business supplying similar rails to fintech companies, positioning it as a natural fit for a large consumer platform entering payments.
Key features expected through the partnership include:
- Peer-to-peer payments between X users
- FDIC-insured deposit accounts
- Visa debit cards for everyday spending
The expansion places X in direct competition with established payment apps and digital wallets, as it seeks to capture a share of the growing market for embedded financial services.
