Coinkite has released a firmware update for its Coldcard hardware wallets designed to bolster the way seed phrases are generated, and it is advising users to create fresh seeds to fully benefit from the improved security.
What Changed in the Update
The firmware upgrade targets the process by which Coldcard devices produce seed phrases, the master keys that control access to a user's Bitcoin holdings. By strengthening this generation mechanism, Coinkite aims to reduce the risk that a seed could be predicted or compromised.
However, the company was clear that installing the update alone does not retroactively fix seeds that were created under the older process. Any wallet still relying on a potentially vulnerable seed remains exposed until the user takes action.
A firmware patch cannot undo a weak seed already in use — only a fresh one restores full protection.
Why Users Should Act
Coinkite is urging holders to generate entirely new seed phrases and migrate their funds accordingly. The recommendation reflects a fundamental principle of hardware wallet security: the strength of a wallet ultimately rests on the randomness and integrity of its underlying seed.
For users who continue operating with older seeds, the upgrade offers limited protection. The company stressed that the safest path is to create a new seed on updated firmware and transfer assets to the newly secured wallet.
- Install the latest Coldcard firmware release.
- Generate a brand-new seed phrase on the updated device.
- Move funds from any wallet using an older, potentially vulnerable seed.
The episode underscores an ongoing challenge in the self-custody space, where hardware manufacturers must continually harden their devices against evolving threats while relying on users to follow through on recommended security steps.
