Coinkite, the company behind the popular Coldcard hardware wallet, has rolled out new firmware designed to strengthen how wallet seeds are generated, following a high-profile exploit that saw roughly $130 million in Bitcoin drained from a user.
What Changed in the New Firmware
The updated software now requires users to contribute their own randomness during the seed generation process, adding an extra layer of unpredictability to the creation of private keys. The move aims to reduce reliance on the device's internal random number generation alone, giving users a direct hand in fortifying the security of their wallets.
Beyond the seed-generation overhaul, the firmware also patches several additional security issues that Coinkite says surfaced during an intensive review of its systems. The company conducted a three-week examination of its codebase and hardware in the wake of the incident.
