CoinEx to cease operation after 9 years, citing ‘significant’ crypto contraction

By Diego Whitfield · · 1 min read

CoinEx, the cryptocurrency exchange that launched nearly a decade ago, has announced it will shut down its operations, blaming a "significant" contraction across the digital asset market for making its business unsustainable.

Why CoinEx Is Closing

The exchange pointed to a combination of shrinking trading volumes and thinning liquidity as central factors behind its decision. According to the platform, these declines have been compounded by mounting regulatory and compliance expenses that have pushed operating costs beyond what the company described as "reasonable boundaries."

After nine years in the market, CoinEx said the pressures of running a compliant trading venue amid deteriorating conditions had simply become too great to justify continued operation.

The math no longer worked: falling volumes met rising costs, and something had to give.

What Users Need to Know

CoinEx has told its customers that the withdrawal window will remain open until Dec. 22, giving account holders a defined period to move their funds off the platform before it goes dark. Users are being urged to act within that timeframe to avoid complications retrieving their assets.

The closure adds to a broader pattern of consolidation and retreat within the crypto industry, where smaller and mid-tier exchanges have found it increasingly difficult to compete against dominant players while absorbing the growing burden of regulatory obligations.

Key points for affected users:

  • Withdrawals remain available until Dec. 22
  • Declining volumes and liquidity cited as primary causes
  • Rising compliance and regulatory costs contributed to the decision

For a platform that survived multiple market cycles since its founding, the wind-down underscores how challenging the current environment has become for exchanges operating outside the top tier.
