Coinbase is setting its sights on becoming Canada's dominant crypto trading venue, but the exchange's newly appointed country chief says the ambition hinges on regulators delivering permanent, clearly defined rules rather than the stopgap measures currently governing the sector.
A Bid to Become the 'Everything Exchange'
Eric Richmond, who recently stepped into the role of CEO at Coinbase Canada, outlined a vision for the platform to serve as a one-stop destination for a broad range of digital asset activity. That includes moving beyond simple spot trading into more sophisticated offerings such as derivatives, tokenized real-world assets and decentralized finance products.
The strategy reflects a wider industry trend of consolidating multiple financial services under a single roof, positioning crypto exchanges to compete more directly with traditional brokerages and financial institutions.
"Permanent rules, not temporary exemptions, are what the industry needs to build with confidence in Canada."
Richmond argued that the range of products Coinbase hopes to bring to Canadian customers can only be delivered responsibly once the regulatory environment offers long-term certainty.
The Case for Clearer Rules
At the heart of Richmond's message is frustration with Canada's reliance on temporary exemptions to oversee crypto trading platforms. Such arrangements, he suggested, leave companies operating in a state of uncertainty and make it difficult to commit to long-term investment and product development.
Richmond is pressing for a durable framework that gives firms the confidence to expand their operations without fear that the rules could shift or expire. Clear guidelines, he contends, would benefit both businesses and consumers by establishing predictable standards across the market.
Key priorities on Coinbase Canada's expansion roadmap include:
- Derivatives products for Canadian traders
- Tokenized assets tied to real-world value
- Decentralized finance offerings
The push comes as jurisdictions worldwide race to formalize their approach to digital assets, with exchanges lobbying for regulatory clarity that could unlock new lines of business while reassuring cautious investors.
