Coinbase gets CFTC approval for US derivatives clearinghouse

By Diego Whitfield · · 1 min read

Coinbase has secured approval from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission to operate its own derivatives clearinghouse in the United States, a move that brings a key piece of trading infrastructure directly under the exchange's control.

A Push Toward In-House Infrastructure

The green light from the CFTC allows Coinbase to clear derivatives transactions internally rather than relying on third-party providers. Owning a clearinghouse gives the exchange greater command over the settlement process, potentially reducing costs and streamlining operations for its US customers trading regulated products.

The approval marks another step in Coinbase's broader effort to expand its regulated derivatives offerings, a segment that has become increasingly important as the company seeks to diversify beyond spot trading.

Bringing clearing operations in-house signals a maturing crypto industry building the same regulated plumbing that underpins traditional finance.

Following Kraken's Lead

Coinbase is not alone in pursuing this strategy. Rival exchange Kraken made a similar move earlier this year when its parent company acquired Bitnomial, gaining access to a CFTC-regulated exchange, clearinghouse and brokerage in a single transaction completed in May.

The parallel moves by two of the largest US crypto exchanges highlight a growing trend among established players to own the full stack of derivatives infrastructure rather than depending on outside partners.

Key developments in the space include:

  • Coinbase winning CFTC approval to run its own derivatives clearinghouse
  • Kraken's parent acquiring Bitnomial and its regulated infrastructure in May
  • Both firms positioning to compete more directly in regulated derivatives markets

For US traders, the shift could translate into more integrated platforms where exchange, brokerage and clearing functions operate under one roof, all within the CFTC's regulatory framework.
