Coinbase debuts tokenized stocks on Base network, joining race to bring equities on blockchain

By Diego Whitfield · · 1 min read

Coinbase has launched tokenized versions of major U.S. equities on its Base network, marking the exchange's entry into the increasingly crowded field of bringing traditional stocks onto the blockchain.

A Curated Debut

The rollout begins with tokenized representations of some of the market's most recognizable technology names, including Apple, Nvidia, Meta and Alphabet. By starting with blue-chip stocks, Coinbase is targeting assets that already command deep interest from retail and institutional investors alike.

The tokens are issued under a newly established framework based in Abu Dhabi, a regulatory pathway that allows the exchange to offer blockchain-based equity products while navigating the compliance requirements that have long complicated such offerings.

Wall Street's most familiar names are now trading on-chain, and Coinbase wants to lead the charge.

Base, Coinbase's own Ethereum layer-2 network, serves as the settlement rail for these products. Hosting the tokenized stocks on its proprietary chain gives Coinbase greater control over the user experience and ties the initiative directly to its broader ecosystem ambitions.

Joining a Competitive Field

Coinbase is far from alone in chasing the tokenization opportunity. A growing number of crypto firms and traditional finance players have moved to put equities, bonds and other real-world assets on blockchains, betting that the technology can deliver faster settlement and broader access.

Proponents argue that tokenized stocks could reshape how everyday investors interact with equity markets. Potential advantages frequently cited include:

  • Round-the-clock trading beyond traditional market hours
  • Faster, blockchain-based settlement
  • Broader access for investors outside the U.S.

Whether Coinbase's entry accelerates mainstream adoption will depend on regulatory clarity and investor appetite. For now, the exchange's move signals its intent to be a central player as the lines between crypto and traditional finance continue to blur.
