Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong is championing the rise of "agentic finance," pointing to a milestone of more than 100 million AI-driven payments processed on the company's Base network as evidence that autonomous software is becoming a major force in crypto adoption.
AI Agents Take the Wheel
Armstrong argues that artificial intelligence agents — software programs capable of acting on behalf of users — will drive the next wave of cryptocurrency use. Rather than humans manually approving each transaction, these agents can transact automatically, paying for services, data, or goods as they operate.
Central to this vision is a trio of technologies: the Base network, the USDC stablecoin, and a payment protocol known as x402. Together, Coinbase says, they form the plumbing that allows machines to move value seamlessly without traditional banking friction.
When machines can pay each other in seconds, the old barriers of banking hours and borders simply vanish.
The 100 million payment figure signals that this isn't merely a theoretical concept. The volume of AI-related transactions suggests growing real-world experimentation with autonomous agents that can settle payments instantly using stablecoins on a low-cost blockchain.
Why Stablecoins and Base Matter
Stablecoins like USDC are well suited to machine-to-machine commerce because their value stays pegged to the dollar, removing the volatility that makes other cryptocurrencies impractical for routine payments. Base, Coinbase's layer-2 network built on Ethereum, offers the speed and low fees needed to handle high volumes of small transactions.
The x402 protocol revives the long-dormant HTTP status code "402 Payment Required," repurposing it to let websites and services request instant crypto payments directly through internet requests. That design could allow AI agents to pay for online resources on the fly.
Key elements Armstrong highlighted include:
- Base as the settlement layer for high-frequency, low-cost transactions
- USDC as a stable unit of account for machine payments
- x402 as the standard enabling automated, on-demand payments
For Coinbase, agentic finance represents both a bet on the future of AI and a strategy to expand crypto's practical utility beyond speculation and into everyday digital infrastructure.
