Circle debuts Arc blockchain which Jeremy Allaire calls ‘more consequential’ than USDC

By Diego Whitfield · · 2 min read

Circle has launched Arc, a new blockchain purpose-built for payments, tokenized assets and institutional finance, with co-founder and CEO Jeremy Allaire describing the network as potentially "more consequential" than the company's flagship USDC stablecoin.

A New Foundation for On-Chain Finance

The USDC issuer designed Arc specifically to handle the demands of institutional-grade financial activity, including payments, settlement and the tokenization of real-world assets. The move signals Circle's ambition to expand beyond issuing a stablecoin and to establish itself as a core infrastructure provider for the broader digital asset economy.

Allaire's framing of Arc as more significant than USDC is notable given that the stablecoin has become one of the most widely used dollar-pegged tokens in the market. By building its own chain, Circle aims to control the rails on which its products operate rather than depending solely on third-party networks.

Circle is betting that owning the infrastructure could matter more than owning the token.

Banks and Payment Giants Move In

The launch arrives as traditional financial institutions and major payment companies increasingly enter the stablecoin arena. Banks and established payment processors have shown growing interest in dollar-backed digital tokens as regulatory clarity improves and demand for faster, cheaper settlement rises.

That competitive pressure helps explain Circle's push to differentiate itself. With rivals and legacy players eyeing the same market, a dedicated blockchain tailored to institutional needs could give the company an edge in attracting enterprise clients and tokenization projects.

Arc's focus reflects a broader shift in the industry, where the conversation has moved from speculative trading toward practical use cases such as cross-border payments and asset issuance.

  • Built for payments and settlement
  • Designed to support tokenized real-world assets
  • Aimed at institutional and enterprise finance

Whether Arc ultimately outstrips USDC in importance remains to be seen, but Circle's decision to build its own network underscores how central blockchain infrastructure has become to the future of finance.
