Brazil's largest lender Itaú is stepping deeper into the tokenization

By Diego Whitfield · · 1 min read

Itaú Unibanco, Brazil's biggest bank, is deepening its involvement in asset tokenization through a new partnership aimed at bringing traditional financial instruments onto blockchain rails.

A New Tokenization Partnership

The lender announced it has joined forces with OpenAssets, a firm that specializes in tokenization technology, to trial tokenized bonds and investment funds. The collaboration puts Itaú among the growing ranks of major financial institutions experimenting with blockchain-based versions of conventional assets.

The pilot is being conducted under the oversight of ANBIMA, Brazil's financial markets association and self-regulatory body, which is coordinating the initiative to explore how tokenization can be applied within the country's capital markets.

Brazil's largest bank is betting that the future of finance runs on blockchain rails.

Testing the Waters

By working alongside a regulatory-backed program, Itaú is signaling that it wants to explore tokenization in a controlled environment rather than moving unilaterally. The involvement of ANBIMA provides a framework that could help shape future rules for digital assets in the region.

Tokenization refers to the process of representing ownership of real-world assets—such as bonds, funds, and other securities—as digital tokens on a blockchain. Proponents argue the technology can streamline settlement, improve transparency, and open access to a wider pool of investors.

Key elements of the effort include:

  • Testing tokenized bonds and investment funds
  • Collaboration with tokenization specialist OpenAssets
  • Regulatory coordination through ANBIMA's pilot program

The move underscores how tokenization is gaining momentum among established banks worldwide, with institutions increasingly treating blockchain infrastructure as a potential foundation for the next generation of financial products.
