BlackRock, Goldman, and JP Morgan Will Give Tokenized Stocks a Try

By Diego Whitfield · · 2 min read

Wall Street's biggest names are stepping into the world of tokenized assets, with a new pilot program aiming to test how traditional securities can move onto blockchain rails.

A Major Industry Collaboration

The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation, the backbone of America's securities settlement system, is spearheading a pilot involving close to 40 financial institutions. The initiative brings together heavyweight participants including BlackRock, Goldman Sachs, and JP Morgan to explore how tokenized stocks and U.S. Treasuries might function within existing market infrastructure.

The DTCC processes trillions of dollars in transactions daily, making its involvement a significant signal that tokenization is moving beyond experimental fringes and into the heart of established finance. By coordinating a broad group of firms, the effort seeks to identify how digital versions of traditional assets could be issued, traded, and settled.

When the plumbing of Wall Street starts experimenting with blockchain, tokenization is no longer just a crypto talking point.

Why Tokenization Matters

Tokenization refers to the process of representing real-world assets, such as equities or government bonds, as digital tokens on a blockchain. Proponents argue this approach could streamline settlement times, reduce costs, and open the door to around-the-clock trading, addressing some of the inefficiencies embedded in legacy systems.

For institutions like BlackRock, which has already ventured into tokenized funds, the pilot represents a chance to test the technology under real-world conditions alongside peers and regulators. The participation of major banks underscores growing conviction that blockchain-based securities could reshape how capital markets operate.

Key aims of the pilot include:

  • Testing the issuance and settlement of tokenized stocks and Treasuries
  • Evaluating how digital assets integrate with current market infrastructure
  • Bringing together a wide range of financial firms to standardize approaches

Still, questions around regulation, interoperability, and scalability remain. The results of the DTCC-led effort could help determine whether tokenized securities become a mainstream fixture or remain a niche innovation in the years ahead.
