BlackRock brings tokenized money market funds to Europe via JPMorgan

By Diego Whitfield · · 1 min read

BlackRock is expanding its tokenized money market fund offerings into Europe through a partnership with JPMorgan, marking another step in the growing convergence of traditional finance and blockchain technology.

A New Chapter for Tokenized Funds

The world's largest asset manager will use JPMorgan's Kinexys platform to tokenize shares of select money market funds. The initiative will cover funds denominated in three major currencies: British pounds, euros and US dollars, giving European institutional clients access to blockchain-based versions of familiar cash-management products.

Money market funds are widely used by institutions and corporations to park cash in low-risk, liquid instruments. By tokenizing these shares, the collaboration aims to bring the efficiency and around-the-clock settlement capabilities of blockchain technology to a corner of finance long dominated by legacy systems.

Two financial giants are betting that the future of cash management runs on blockchain rails.

Traditional Finance Embraces Blockchain

JPMorgan's Kinexys platform has become a central piece of the bank's blockchain strategy, handling tokenized assets and digital payments infrastructure. The partnership with BlackRock underscores how established institutions are increasingly turning to tokenization to modernize back-office processes and unlock new efficiencies.

The move builds on BlackRock's earlier forays into tokenized assets, including its work in the United States, and signals the firm's intent to broaden that footprint across international markets. Europe represents a significant opportunity given its deep pool of institutional investors and evolving regulatory landscape around digital assets.

Key features of the expansion include:

  • Tokenized shares of select BlackRock money market funds
  • Support for pound, euro and US dollar denominations
  • Deployment on JPMorgan's Kinexys blockchain platform

As more asset managers and banks pursue tokenization, the BlackRock-JPMorgan tie-up adds momentum to a broader industry shift toward representing traditional financial instruments on distributed ledgers.
