BlackRock: AI Agents Could Drive Crypto's Next Demand Wave

By Diego Whitfield · · 2 min read

Autonomous AI agents that buy data, pay for services, and rent computing power on their own could emerge as one of the most powerful forces driving fresh capital into crypto markets, according to BlackRock, the world's largest asset manager.

AI Agents as a New Source of Demand

BlackRock's thesis centers on a shift already underway in software: AI systems are moving from tools that assist humans to agents that act independently. As these agents take on tasks without direct human oversight, they will need a way to transact — and traditional financial rails, built around human accounts and slow settlement, may not be up to the job.

Digital assets, by contrast, offer programmable money that machines can move instantly and around the clock. That makes cryptocurrencies and stablecoins a natural fit for a world where software negotiates and pays for resources in real time.

When machines start spending money, they won't wait for banking hours — and that could quietly reshape crypto demand.

The asset manager frames this as a slow-building, structural trend rather than a speculative spike. If AI agents proliferate across industries, their cumulative economic activity could route enormous volumes of transactions through blockchain-based payment systems.

What Agents Might Actually Pay For

The vision involves agents autonomously handling the kinds of micro-transactions that would be impractical for humans to manage manually. These include purchasing datasets, subscribing to services, and leasing computational capacity to complete their assigned work.

Several categories of spending could feed this demand:

  • Buying access to data and specialized information
  • Paying for third-party software and APIs
  • Renting computing power and cloud resources

Because these payments could occur constantly and at high frequency, crypto networks capable of cheap, fast settlement stand to benefit. BlackRock's argument suggests that the infrastructure supporting machine-to-machine commerce may become a meaningful pillar of crypto adoption over time.

The framing is notable coming from BlackRock, whose spot Bitcoin and Ethereum products have already channeled substantial institutional money into digital assets. By pointing to AI agents as a future catalyst, the firm signals that it sees demand drivers extending well beyond current investor appetite.
