Bitwise to put down Dogecoin ETF less than a year after launch

By Priya Chen · · 1 min read

Bitwise Asset Management is preparing to shutter its Dogecoin exchange-traded fund less than a year after bringing it to market, marking an early end for one of the more experimental crypto products to reach US investors.

A Short-Lived Fund

The Bitwise Dogecoin ETF, which traded under the ticker BWOW, failed to gain meaningful traction with investors. As of Sept. 9, the fund held roughly $688,000 in net assets — a modest figure that fell well short of the scale typically needed to keep an ETF commercially viable.

According to the plans laid out for the wind-down, trading in the fund is expected to cease on Oct. 14. Investors who remain in the fund will then receive cash payouts, which are anticipated to be distributed around Oct. 22.

A meme coin made it to Wall Street, but Wall Street barely noticed.

The decision underscores the challenge of translating internet-driven enthusiasm for tokens like Dogecoin into sustained demand for regulated investment vehicles.

What It Signals for Crypto ETFs

The closure arrives during a period of rapid expansion for cryptocurrency-linked funds, as issuers race to launch products tied to assets beyond Bitcoin and Ether. Yet BWOW's early exit is a reminder that not every digital asset commands enough investor interest to support a standalone fund.

Several factors likely contributed to the fund's struggles:

  • Limited investor appetite for a Dogecoin-specific product
  • A small asset base that made ongoing operations difficult to justify
  • Intense competition among a growing field of crypto ETFs

For Bitwise, the move allows the firm to redirect resources toward products with stronger demand. For the broader industry, the episode offers a cautionary case study on how meme-driven popularity does not always carry over into long-term financial products.
