BitMEX, the exchange that invented perps, is shutting down

By Diego Whitfield · · 2 min read

BitMEX, the pioneering cryptocurrency derivatives exchange that introduced the perpetual swap to the digital asset world, has notified users it will cease operations, bringing an 11-year run to a close.

## The End of an Era BitMEX has informed its customers that it intends to wind down its platform, with operations set to conclude by September 23. The competitive landscape also shifted dramatically as larger exchanges captured market share once held by BitMEX.

Key points from the exchange's journey include:

  • Launched in 2014 and credited with inventing the perpetual swap
  • Offered leverage of up to 100x at its peak
  • Operations expected to wind down by September 23

The closure signals how much the crypto trading environment has evolved since BitMEX's heyday, with regulatory pressures and intense competition reshaping which platforms endure. For an exchange that helped write the playbook for modern cr
