BitMEX shuts down: perpetuals pioneer officially closes it doors after 11 years

By Diego Whitfield · · 2 min read

BitMEX, the crypto derivatives exchange that pioneered perpetual swap contracts, has officially ceased trading operations after 11 years in business. The platform, co-founded by Arthur Hayes, halted all trading and deposits but confirmed that users can still access their accounts to withdraw funds during the wind-down process.

The End of an Era

BitMEX launched in 2014 and quickly became one of the most influential venues in the crypto derivatives space. Its introduction of perpetual swap contracts reshaped how traders speculated on digital assets, offering leveraged exposure without expiration dates. That product became a template widely copied across the industry, cementing the exchange's reputation as an innovator.

The company said trading and deposits have been suspended, marking a definitive step in its closure. Despite the shutdown, the exchange emphasized that customers retain the ability to log in and move their assets off the platform as it manages the transition.

A platform that helped invent modern crypto trading has quietly reached the end of the road.

Winding Down Operations

For users, the immediate priority is retrieving funds while withdrawal access remains open. The exchange has framed the process as an orderly wind-down rather than an abrupt collapse, giving account holders time to act.

  • Trading has been halted
  • Deposits are no longer accepted
  • Withdrawals remain available during the wind-down

BitMEX's departure closes a notable chapter in cryptocurrency history. The exchange navigated significant regulatory challenges over the years, including scrutiny from U.S. authorities, yet remained a recognizable name for derivatives traders throughout much of the last decade.

Its exit underscores the shifting competitive landscape in crypto derivatives, where newer platforms have captured market share and evolving compliance demands have reshaped how such businesses operate. For a generation of traders, BitMEX will be remembered as the venue that brought the perpetual swap into the mainstream.
