Bitget to exit Japan, close remaining positions after Dec. 31

By Diego Whitfield · · 1 min read

Cryptocurrency exchange Bitget has announced it will withdraw from the Japanese market, halting new registrations from residents there and preparing to shut down remaining user positions after the end of the year.

Winding Down Operations

Bitget has already stopped accepting new sign-ups from Japan residents as part of its exit strategy. The company plans to begin gradually restricting existing accounts starting November 1, giving current users a window to manage or close out their holdings before the exchange fully pulls back.

The phased approach is designed to give affected customers time to withdraw funds and unwind their trading activity. According to the exchange, any remaining positions will be closed after December 31, marking the effective end of its services for Japanese users.

The clock is ticking for Japan-based users, who must settle their accounts before the year-end deadline.

What Users Need to Know

Existing account holders in Japan should prepare for progressively tighter limitations as the November restrictions take hold. The exchange has urged users to take action to avoid disruption when the final cutoff arrives.

Key dates and actions for affected users include:

  • New registrations from Japan residents are no longer accepted
  • Account restrictions begin rolling out on November 1
  • All remaining positions will be closed after December 31

Japan maintains one of the world's stricter regulatory frameworks for digital assets, requiring exchanges to register with the Financial Services Agency and comply with rigorous compliance standards. Global platforms have frequently faced hurdles operating in the country, and market exits are not uncommon as firms weigh regulatory costs against local opportunities.

The move underscores the ongoing challenge international exchanges face in balancing worldwide expansion with the demands of individual national jurisdictions.
