Bitcoin withstands $90 oil and rising yields while gold slides. A firm dollar is the catch

By Diego Whitfield · · 2 min read

Bitcoin is holding its ground even as a burst of macroeconomic pressure — oil pushing toward $90 a barrel and climbing bond yields — knocks the wind out of stocks and gold. Yet a strengthening U.S. dollar remains the one variable that could complicate the cryptocurrency's resilience in the days ahead.

Bitcoin Shrugs Off Macro Headwinds

Bitcoin has traded in choppy fashion but broadly maintained its levels while traditional risk assets buckle under the weight of surging energy costs and rising interest rates. With crude oil advancing near the $90 mark, inflation worries have crept back into markets, pressuring equities and dragging gold lower.

The performance is notable because gold, often framed as bitcoin's rival store-of-value asset, has slipped even as bitcoin stays comparatively stable. That divergence suggests some investors are treating the largest cryptocurrency as a distinct play rather than moving in lockstep with the traditional safe haven.

Bitcoin is holding firm while gold stumbles — but a rising dollar could still spoil the party.

The Dollar Is the Catch

The complicating factor is the U.S. dollar, which has been firming up alongside the climb in Treasury yields. Historically, a stronger greenback tends to weigh on bitcoin and other risk assets, since it raises the relative cost of holding non-dollar investments and tightens global financial conditions.

Higher bond yields add another layer of pressure. As returns on government debt rise, the appeal of holding assets that generate no yield — such as bitcoin and gold — can diminish, drawing capital toward safer, income-producing alternatives.

For now, several crosscurrents are shaping the market backdrop:

  • Crude oil approaching $90 a barrel, stoking inflation concerns
  • Rising Treasury yields pressuring equities and precious metals
  • A firming dollar that poses a lingering risk to crypto momentum

Whether bitcoin can sustain its relative strength will likely hinge on how the dollar behaves. If the currency continues to gain, it could test the cryptocurrency's ability to weather the broader tightening in financial conditions.
