Bitcoin wallets untouched for 10 years moved $40 million worth of coins

By Diego Whitfield · · 2 min read

Six long-dormant Bitcoin wallets came back to life this month, shifting roughly $40 million worth of coins after sitting untouched for a full decade — a movement that briefly stoked speculation about veteran holders cashing out, even as broader data suggests such awakenings are becoming rarer.

Old Coins on the Move

The six wallets, each inactive for around ten years, transferred their holdings during August in a series of transactions worth about $40 million combined. When coins that have not moved for many years suddenly shift, market watchers often take notice, since these transfers can signal that early adopters are preparing to sell or reposition their long-held stakes.

Notably, most of the coins were not routed to exchanges. That distinction matters because transfers to trading platforms typically hint at intent to sell, whereas movements to private wallets can indicate anything from custody changes to security upgrades or estate planning.

When coins buried for a decade suddenly stir, the market listens — but this time, most avoided the exit doors.

A Cooling Trend

Despite the eye-catching headline figure, data compiled by Galaxy paints a picture of declining activity among Bitcoin's oldest holders. Dormant coin movement has fallen to its lowest level since 2022, suggesting long-term holders are largely content to sit tight rather than realize gains.

The trend is even more pronounced when viewed across the full year. According to the figures, 2026 is on track to see less than half the volume of reactivated dormant coins compared with the previous year, underscoring how quiet the veteran cohort has become.

Analysts often read low dormant-coin activity as a sign of conviction among seasoned holders, who appear unwilling to part with their positions despite market conditions. The behavior can also reflect a broader supply squeeze, as fewer old coins circulate back into active trading.

  • Six wallets dormant for a decade moved about $40 million in August
  • The majority of the transferred coins bypassed exchanges
  • Dormant coin activity is at its lowest since 2022
  • Full-year 2026 movement is pacing below half of last year's total

While the sudden reactivation of decade-old wallets always draws attention, the wider data suggests these events remain outliers in an environment where Bitcoin's oldest holders are increasingly choosing to stay put.
