A cryptography research firm has floated a technical blueprint designed to help Bitcoin holders reclaim their funds in the event that a sufficiently powerful quantum computer breaks the network's underlying security, a scenario often referred to as "Q-Day."

What Project Eleven Is Proposing

Project Eleven, a firm focused on quantum-resistant security, has outlined a recovery mechanism built around post-quantum cryptographic proofs. The core idea is to give wallet owners a way to demonstrate they controlled a Bitcoin address before a quantum attack occurred, allowing legitimate holders to distinguish themselves from potential thieves wielding quantum machines.

The concern centers on the elliptic curve cryptography that secures Bitcoin transactions today. A large-scale, fault-tolerant quantum computer could theoretically derive private keys from exposed public keys, putting vulnerable coins at risk. The proposal seeks to establish a fallback path so that rightful owners are not simply left defenseless.

The plan hinges on proving you owned your coins before a quantum adversary could ever touch them.

How the Recovery Proof Would Work

Under the framework, users would generate a cryptographic commitment tied to their existing holdings using quantum-safe methods. If Q-Day arrives and legacy signatures become breakable, that pre-computed proof could serve as evidence of prior ownership, enabling a controlled process to move funds to secure, quantum-resistant addresses.

The approach is intended to address one of the thorniest problems in the quantum-versus-Bitcoin debate: in a scenario where both an attacker and the true owner could produce a valid-looking signature, the network needs some way to decide who is legitimate. A timestamped, post-quantum proof of earlier control aims to break that tie in favor of the original holder.
