Bitcoin eyes new August lows as Binance longs face ‘cleanout’

By Diego Whitfield · · 2 min read

Bitcoin is showing signs of renewed weakness as leveraged long positions on Binance face mounting pressure, with analysts warning that a "cleanout" of over-extended traders could push the cryptocurrency toward fresh August lows.

Open Interest Slides With Price

Futures open interest on Binance has declined in tandem with Bitcoin's spot price, according to data highlighted in analysis published on CryptoQuant. The drop suggests that leveraged positions are being unwound as the market digests recent volatility.

Open interest measures the total value of outstanding derivatives contracts, and a falling figure alongside declining prices typically points to traders closing out or being forced out of positions. On Binance, one of the largest venues for crypto derivatives, that dynamic has become increasingly visible.

When leverage builds up on one side of the market, a sharp move can trigger a cascade of liquidations that accelerates the price swing.

The concern among analysts is that long positions — bets on higher prices — have grown crowded, leaving them vulnerable to a swift downward move that could liquidate large amounts of leveraged exposure.

Pressure on Leveraged Longs

Commentary shared on CryptoQuant flagged the growing risk to traders who remain positioned for a rally. A so-called "cleanout" would see these longs flushed from the market, an event that often coincides with a short-term price bottom.

Key factors traders are watching include:

  • Whether Bitcoin revisits its August lows
  • The pace at which open interest continues to fall
  • Signs of capitulation among leveraged long holders

Such liquidation events, while painful for those caught on the wrong side, are sometimes viewed as a reset that clears excessive leverage from the system. Analysts note that the removal of over-extended positions can lay the groundwork for a healthier, more stable base before any recovery attempt.

For now, market participants remain cautious as Bitcoin tests lower levels, with the interplay between spot price and derivatives positioning shaping the near-term outlook.
