Binance has rolled out a new payment feature that allows international travelers to spend the Tether stablecoin (USDT) at merchants across Japan, tapping into the country's popular PayPay network through a partnership with local firm HIVEX.
How the System Works
The integration lets overseas visitors use Binance Pay to settle purchases in USDT at the vast majority of merchants that already accept PayPay, one of Japan's most widely used mobile payment platforms. The transaction is bridged through HIVEX, a Japanese company facilitating the connection between the crypto wallet and the domestic payment infrastructure.
Crucially, the arrangement shields merchants from any exposure to cryptocurrency volatility. While customers pay using their USDT balances, stores receive the equivalent value in Japanese yen, meaning businesses do not need to hold or manage digital assets to participate.
Tourists can now tap their crypto balances to pay at Japanese shops, while merchants simply see yen land in their accounts.
Targeting Travelers and Tourism
The move is aimed squarely at the growing number of international tourists visiting Japan, offering crypto holders a way to spend their digital assets without the friction of currency conversion or carrying local cash. By leveraging PayPay's extensive merchant footprint, Binance instantly gains access to a broad retail network.
The rollout reflects a wider trend of crypto payment services seeking real-world utility beyond trading and speculation. Stablecoins like USDT, which are pegged to the US dollar, are increasingly being positioned as practical tools for everyday spending given their price stability.
Key aspects of the offering include:
- Overseas users can pay in USDT via Binance Pay
- Acceptance at most PayPay-supported merchants in Japan
- Merchants receive settlement in Japanese yen
- The service is powered through a partnership with HIVEX
For Binance, the launch strengthens its presence in the Asian market and demonstrates how stablecoins can be woven into established local payment ecosystems, potentially setting a template for similar integrations in other tourism-heavy regions.
