As crypto perpetual futures boom, Ethereum’s role is shifting

By Diego Whitfield · · 2 min read

Ethereum's position in the booming perpetual futures market is being redefined, as some developers argue the network's real value lies not in hosting trades directly but in underpinning the layer-2 networks where much of that activity now occurs.

The Perpetuals Surge

Perpetual futures — derivatives contracts without an expiry date — have become one of the most active corners of the crypto trading landscape. Their explosive growth has intensified demand for blockchains capable of handling rapid, high-volume transactions with minimal latency and cost.

That demand has fueled competition among faster networks, many of which promise near-instant settlement and cheap fees. Against these rivals, Ethereum's base layer can appear disadvantaged, given its higher costs and slower throughput compared with newer alternatives built specifically for speed.

Ethereum may not need to win the speed race to remain essential to it.

A Shift Toward Settlement

Rather than trying to compete head-on with faster chains for trading volume, some builders contend that Ethereum's enduring strength is as a foundational settlement layer. In this view, the network anchors the layer-2 solutions where much of the perpetuals trading actually takes place.

Layer-2 networks handle transactions off the main chain while relying on Ethereum for security and final settlement. That arrangement allows traders to benefit from lower costs and quicker execution without abandoning the security guarantees of the base layer.

The reframing suggests a division of labor in the ecosystem:

  • Layer-2 networks manage high-frequency trading activity
  • Ethereum provides security and final settlement
  • Faster chains compete for direct on-chain volume

What It Means for Ethereum

This evolving role positions Ethereum less as a direct venue for trading and more as critical infrastructure supporting the broader derivatives economy. For proponents, that is a durable advantage that does not hinge on matching the raw speed of competing blockchains.

As perpetual futures continue to attract capital and attention, the debate over Ethereum's place in the market underscores a larger question facing the industry: whether dominance will be measured by transaction speed or by the security and trust that underpin where value ultimately settles.
