A16z-Backed OpenReserve Gets Approval for Full-Service National Bank

By Diego Whitfield · · 2 min read

OpenReserve, a fintech startup backed by venture giant Andreessen Horowitz, has secured approval to operate as a full-service national bank, positioning it to offer insured deposits and traditional lending alongside its stablecoin ambitions.

A Different Regulatory Path

Rather than pursuing the trust-bank charter that has become the go-to route for many crypto companies seeking federal recognition, OpenReserve opted for a full national bank charter. The distinction is significant: a full charter opens the door to a broader range of banking activities, including deposit-taking and conventional loans.

The approval from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency marks a notable milestone for a company operating at the intersection of digital assets and mainstream finance. Trust banks, by contrast, are typically restricted to custody and fiduciary services, limiting the scope of what a crypto firm can offer its customers.

OpenReserve is betting that a full banking license, not a narrow trust charter, is the surest route to blending crypto and traditional finance.

What the Charter Unlocks

With a full-service charter, OpenReserve can pursue federally insured deposits and standard lending operations, capabilities that have long separated conventional banks from the crypto sector. That combination could allow the company to serve customers who want both digital-asset products and familiar banking services under one roof.

The move also reflects a broader strategy to issue stablecoins within a regulated framework. By anchoring its operations to a national bank charter, OpenReserve aims to give its stablecoin business the credibility and oversight that regulators and institutional partners increasingly demand.

Key elements of the approval include:

  • The ability to take insured deposits
  • Authority to offer conventional lending
  • A regulated foundation for stablecoin issuance

The backing of Andreessen Horowitz, one of the most active investors in the crypto and fintech space, adds weight to OpenReserve's ambitions as it looks to bridge the gap between digital assets and the traditional banking system.
