A LatAm telecom operator is putting part of its finances on Avalanche

By Diego Whitfield · · 1 min read

A Latin American telecommunications company is moving portions of its financial operations onto the Avalanche blockchain, marking another step toward mainstream corporate adoption of crypto-based settlement rails in emerging markets.

The Deal

Bolivian telecom operator VIVA is working with Iris, a firm led by former IBM Blockchain partner Jules Miller, to integrate stablecoins into key parts of its financial infrastructure. The initiative allows VIVA to tap into blockchain technology for settlement, hold dollar-denominated reserves, and roll out new financial services to its customers.

Rather than tearing out its existing telecom systems, VIVA is layering the blockchain functionality on top of what it already runs. That approach lets the company modernize its treasury and payment operations without the disruption and cost of a full technological overhaul.

A telecom company is quietly becoming a financial services provider, powered by stablecoins on-chain.

Why It Matters

For businesses operating in Latin American economies, stablecoins offer a practical hedge against local currency volatility and a faster, cheaper way to settle transactions. By adopting dollar-pegged tokens, VIVA can maintain reserves in a more stable form while streamlining cross-border and domestic payments.

The move reflects a broader trend of real-world companies using blockchain networks for concrete financial needs rather than speculation. Avalanche, chosen as the underlying network, continues to position itself as a platform for enterprise and institutional applications.

Key elements of the arrangement include:

  • Using stablecoins for transaction settlement
  • Maintaining dollar reserves on-chain
  • Launching new financial services for customers
  • Preserving VIVA's existing telecom infrastructure

Iris, under Miller's leadership, is betting that established companies with large customer bases can become important gateways for stablecoin adoption in regions where access to stable, dollar-based financial tools remains limited.
