24/7 financial rails: How BNY plans to eliminate the weekend lag in U.S. Treasuries

By Diego Whitfield · · 2 min read

BNY, one of the world's largest custodian banks, is preparing to test tokenized U.S. Treasuries on a private blockchain by the end of the year, part of a broader push to build round-the-clock financial infrastructure that would eliminate the settlement delays that currently plague weekend and after-hours trading.

Closing the Weekend Gap

Traditional financial markets operate on fixed schedules, leaving investors exposed during weekends and holidays when settlement systems go dark. That lag has long been a source of friction, particularly for U.S. Treasuries, which serve as a cornerstone of global finance and are traded across time zones around the clock.

BNY's plan aims to tackle that problem head-on by tokenizing Treasury assets and moving them onto blockchain-based rails that can operate continuously. By representing these securities as digital tokens, the bank hopes to enable near-instant settlement regardless of the hour or day.

The goal is a financial system that never sleeps — one where Treasuries can move as freely on a Saturday as they do on a Tuesday.

The initiative reflects a growing appetite among established financial institutions to adopt blockchain technology not as a speculative venture but as a means of modernizing core market plumbing.

Expanding the Settlement Network

Beyond the tokenization pilot, BNY intends to broaden its settlement network to accommodate more international trading hours. The expansion would allow the bank to service clients across a wider range of global markets without being constrained by legacy operating windows.

The move positions BNY among a cohort of major banks experimenting with tokenized real-world assets, a sector that has attracted increasing attention as firms search for efficiency gains and new revenue streams.

Key elements of the bank's approach include:

  • Testing tokenized Treasuries on a private blockchain before year-end
  • Extending settlement coverage to align with more international trading hours
  • Reducing the delays tied to weekend and holiday market closures

If successful, the pilot could serve as a template for how large custodians integrate digital-asset infrastructure into the backbone of traditional finance, signaling that around-the-clock settlement may be moving from concept toward reality.
